St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, located in Memphis Tennessee, open it’s doors in 1962. Founded by entertainer Danny Thomas who had a dream that “no child should die in the dawn of life.”.
In the 1960’s the cure rate for childhood cancer was around 20%. Prior to St. Jude, there was no facility dedicated to researching and battling the cancers that were affecting children. Thanks to many of their efforts, today’s childhood cancer survival rate is close to 80%. However, as we know all to well, if there is even one child dying of cancer, that’s too many. St. Jude has vowed to continue until childhood cancer no longer exists.
From it’s inception, no family has had to pay for the care they receive at St. Jude. Their goal is for the families to worry solely for their children.
The cost to run St. Jude for a single day is approximately $2 million. 75% of St. Jude’s budgeted costs are covered by public contributions, which is why donations are so important.
